The Uttar Pradesh government laid the foundation of Avadh University, Ayodhya, initially as an affiliating university through notification No. 1192/fifteen-10-46(6)-1975 dated March 4, 1975. Prof. (Dr.) Surendra Singh was appointed as its first Vice Chancellor. In a tribute to the renowned socio-economic ideologue and distinguished freedom fighter, Dr. Rammanohar Lohia, the university was renamed Dr. Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University, Ayodhya, in 1993-94.
Initially, the university operated from a rented building in Civil Lines, Ayodhya. The process of acquiring land for the university’s permanent office began in 1976. Finally, on May 2, 1978, the foundation stone for the present administrative building was laid by the then Chancellor and Governor of the state, Shri G.D. Tapase.
