The university was established in 2015 under the Chhattisgarh Vishwavidyalaya (Sanshodhan) Adhiniyam, 2015, which led to the bifurcation of Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University. This division created Durg Vishwavidyalaya, which has jurisdiction over the districts of Durg, Balod, Bemetara, Rajnandgaon, and Kabirdham. Narendra Prasad Dixit served as the first vice chancellor of the university. Following the death of Hemchand Yadav on 12 April 2018, it was announced the next day that the university would be renamed after him. This renaming took effect later that year, pursuant to the Chhattisgarh Vishwavidyalaya (Sanshodhan) Adhiniyam, 2018.
