Madras Christian College can be traced back to the establishment of the General Assembly School by Rev. John Anderson, a missionary from the Church of Scotland, on April 3, 1837. Rev. Anderson played a pivotal role in introducing English medium education in South India, with valuable assistance from Rev. Johnston, Rev. Braidwood, and Margaret Locher Anderson. In 1862, Rev. William Miller arrived and elevated the school to a college, introducing F.A. and B.A. courses in 1865 and 1867, respectively.
By January 1, 1877, through the efforts of Rev. Miller and in collaboration with other Protestant missions in Madras, the institution underwent a transformation and was officially named ‘Madras Christian College.’
