The university originated from the former Postgraduate Centre of Sri Venkateswara University, established in 1968. By 1976, the SVU Postgraduate Centre achieved autonomy, with M. Abel serving as its Vice-Chancellor for the first two terms (1981–87).
In 1987, the Sri Krishnadevaraya Institute of Management was inaugurated with a capital outlay of Rs. 1.2 crores, funded by the UGC. The university, initially a unitary and residential institution, transitioned into a comprehensive affiliating university in 1988.
